Actually, that's not entirely correct.

Most of the time, what you say is true.

However, what is possible (and what I do), is actually block the main thread, until all background threads have completed.

For example, another example of when this technique is used, is when you have a lot of data work to do, so you fire off an application. The application will span multiple threads, and won't shut down, until those background threads are done processing.

Let me ask this, what OS are you running? I'll try and duplicate what you are seeing.
